My Brother John Joseph Jr (Ahmad Mahmoud Hamad Farraj)
On oct. 3. 1950 arrived in St. Joseph from Jordan. He is the blood nephew of John Joseph Sr. A skinny 15-year-old boy, carrying a suitcase containing all his earthly possessions arrived in St. Joseph the lad could not speak a single word of English, only his native Arabic. His only means of communications was through his uncle. Shortly after his Atlantic ocean-spanning 36- hour flight, john Jr. began his "American" education. The first step was being tutored in English for several months by Ms. Kathryn Daeschner, a minister's wife. He used an Arabic-English dictionary, which he still has, and then enrolled at Everett Elementary school. In the course of time, he graduated from Lafayette high school, St. Joseph junior college and the university of Missouri-Kansas city where he earned his degree in pharmacy-cy in 1961. Since then, john has been active not only in the pharmacy business ((chief pharmacist at Rogers pharmacy, at 26th and Frederick avenue) but in various groups including Moila shrine temple and the east side sertoma club where he has served as president No wonder that john, who became an American citizen on March 20, 1961 proudly says, "The United states is land of opportunity."
